GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. - High blood pressure is the single most important risk factor for stroke because it’s the leading cause of stroke. In 2017, the American Heart Association & American Stroke Association announced new blood pressure guidelines – lowering the definition of high blood pressure to account for complications that can occur at lower numbers and to allow for earlier intervention.
World Stroke Day is Monday, October 29 – the day helps to underscore the serious nature and high rates of stroke, raise awareness on how to prevent and spot a stroke.
A healthy blood pressure is still 120/80 or lower, but doctors are now advised to recognize pre-hypertension earlier and address it more directly with patients – working on diet with patients and sometimes medication.
Prevention and recognition.
To prevent high blood pressure or lower it (as well as reduce risk of stroke) –
1. Eat a diet low in salt and processed foods,
2. Eat more fruits and vegetables,
3. Get more activity.
4. Follow your doctor’s recommendations which may include medication.
