SHAKOPEE, Minn. — In the journey to heal the scars of domestic violence, Southern Valley Alliance (SVA) is embarking on a groundbreaking chapter with the launch of a cutting-edge facility. SVA's commitment to the community led to being selected as one of the TEGNA Foundation's Grant recipients.
With a commitment to fostering hope and rejuvenating lives, SVA's Executive Director, Christie Larson, said the new facility is a game changer.
"The building is a secure facility," Larson emphasized, highlighting the paramount importance of safety and comfort for all seeking refuge. "This first room is going to be a children's play area," she added, underlining the thoughtful provisions made for families, ensuring privacy and space, a vital component of the healing process for survivors."
For more than four decades, SVA has been a steadfast ally for victims of domestic violence in Scott and Carver Counties, offering a spectrum of support ranging from court advocacy to round-the-clock assistance.
The organization has witnessed a surge in demand over recent years. Larson noted, "On average, SVA provides support for about a thousand victims each year," citing nearly a double increase in crisis line calls in the past two years. The escalating demand reaffirms the critical need for expanded resources and facilities.
The inauguration of SVA's new Domestic Violence Advocacy Center marks a significant milestone in their pursuit of providing comprehensive aid. "We are really excited. Our brand new location will open January 2nd," Larson shared, exuding enthusiasm about the facility's strategic placement in the heart of Shakopee, ensuring accessibility to the wider community.
The news of SVA's recognition as a TEGNA Foundation grant recipient came as an unexpected and immensely gratifying surprise. This accolade promises increased avenues for the SVA to extend its support and services, propelling their mission forward in this new phase.
The grant is poised to fortify SVA's efforts, enabling them to continue providing aid through a transformative transitional housing program launched recently. "Just in the last year, we started a transitional housing program where our clients are staying up to 12 months," Larson highlighted, emphasizing the vital role this extended support plays in empowering survivors towards safer and happier lives.
A beacon of hope in the community, the alliance signifies a new beginning, promising to restore hope and rebuild lives affected by domestic violence.
