High school grads: Get paid to help your community this summer

This 12-week program from AmeriCorps offers a stipend for working to help their communities by learning leadership skills.

MINNEAPOLIS — If you're a high school graduate looking to do something to give back to your community this summer, the second annual Summer Impact Corps might be exactly what you're seeking.

Applications for the 12-week program are due May 8 and the start date is in June. Members support education, youth enrichment, housing and environmental organizations in more than 500 Minnesota communities while developing leadership skills through service.

“Summer Impact Corps not only changes communities, but it also changes those who’ve committed their time, energy, and passion in service of those communities. It’s no small feat to convene several hundred people for three months, working together five days a week for 150,000 total hours, but it’s literally a labor of love,” said Chue Xiong, Program Director for Summer Impact Corps. “By the end of the summer, participants have developed their leadership skills, their knowledge base around their generation’s most significant issues, and can take pride in directly improving their communities.”

Members serve between 35-40 hours a week and can earn a stipend of $6,600, plus an extra $1,459 for tuition or student loans.
