MINNEAPOLIS — As we approach the end of another year, United Health Foundation is out with its annual look at the health and wellness of Americans.
The 34th edition of the America’s Health Rankings Annual Report looks at 87 different measures from 28 sources, including the Census Bureau and Centers for Disease Control (CDC).
One of the biggest findings in this year's report: Rates for eight chronic conditions all increased to their highest levels in the report's history. This includes conditions such as cancer, diabetes, heart disease and also mental health conditions like depression.
"This is having a significant impact on many Americans," said Dr. Lisa Saul from UnitedHealthcare. "In 2022, 11% of adults had 3 or more of these chronic conditions. This represents over 29 million adults who are needing care, having to manage prescription medication use and possibly having negative impacts on their quality of life."
One major positive measure in the report: almost 93% of U.S. households now have access to high-speed internet, which means most of the country can access health information online, and telehealth services.
In Minnesota, the report listed three health strengths:
- Low household food insecurity
- High prevalence of high school completion
- Low prevalence of insufficient sleep
Minnesota's health weaknesses, or areas of improvement are:
- High racial disparity in premature death rates
- High prevalence of excessive drinking
- Low prevalence of having a dedicated health care provider
