Owner: Dine and Dash suspect shoots security guards at Nicollet Diner

The restaurant owner says a customer tried to leave without paying his bill, was confronted by the security guards, and then shot them while driving by.

MINNEAPOLIS — Two security guards for a Minneapolis restaurant were shot after confronting a patron who walked out on their tab, according to one of the eatery's co-owners.

The shooting occurred at the Nicollet Diner Saturday morning.

Sam Turner, co-owner of Nicollet Diner, told KARE 11 a customer was eating with a group of people who split the bill into separate tabs around 4:30 a.m.

"One of those folks did not pay their tab," said Turner. "They walked out the front door, the server walked out behind them and alerted the security guards to let them know that they had walked out on their tab."

Turner said the conversation escalated, and his employees backed off.

"Then the suspect went and had gotten in their car where they had a firearm, and drove by to the restaurant firing at them," said Turner.

According to Turner, both security guards were shot in the lower body. He said both are expected to recover.

Minneapolis Police said in a press release that the security officers were transported to Hennepin County Medical Center with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds.

"Preliminary reports indicate the shooting happened outside a restaurant after an altercation with customers," the press release read.

No arrests have been made in the matter, said the MPD.

Turner said employees will have access to mental health resources following the traumatic incident.

The business was open to the public later on Saturday.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
