STILLWATER, Minn. — Officials with the Minnesota Department of Corrections have identified the man found dead in his cell at Stillwater Prison on Saturday.

According to a press release, 22-year-old Dalmario Smith was found unresponsive in his cell around 3:30 a.m. Staff began life-saving measures but Smith was pronounced dead at 3:53 a.m.

The Department of Corrections is still investigating the circumstances around his death. Officials said preliminary investigations do not indicate foul play and are looking into the possibility that Smith ingested suspected synthetic drugs, based on evidence found in his cell.

DOC officials noted prison systems in the state and across the country are experiencing challenges related to the introduction of synthetic controlled substances. It's often infused into paper coming into the facility through the mail, officials said. MCF-Stillwater now photocopies incoming mail, except for legal mail due to attorney-client privilege.
