Officials set to begin housing transition for displaced Drake Hotel victims

The demolition is virtually completed, and officials said streets will begin to start opening up Friday afternoon.

MINNEAPOLIS — Officials announced Thursday they are moving to the next phase of the Drake Hotel disaster recovery, which aims to help displaced residents find new housing.

On Jan. 22 the Red Cross disaster shelter, which was being used to house victims at First Covenant Church, will conclude its operations.

Phil Hansen Regional Executive of the American Red Cross said that even as the shelter closes, the Red Cross will still support the victims by helping them address individual needs.

There's a housing transition plan in place, which includes mental health support, financial support, document replacement and transportation.

Hennepin County officials said they are working with families to identify their preferences for housing and helping them find short term and long term solutions.

The demolition is virtually completed, and officials said streets will begin to start opening up Friday afternoon.

City officials said they will continue the effort of investments into affordable housing funding.
