One killed after fireworks-filled vehicle catches on fire

Police said the number of fireworks in the car made it difficult to rescue the person inside.

ST PAUL, Minn. — Police said one person died on Sunday night after their vehicle caught fire following a crash in St. Paul.

Officials said officers were called to the Wilson Avenue and Howard Street area near the St. Paul and Maplewood border for a single-vehicle crash.

Police said the car left the road and hit a tree and light pole before stopping and catching on fire.

The car was full of fireworks and as they exploded, potential rescuers struggled to help the person inside the burning vehicle.

Officers said the driver did not survive. Authorities have released no other information about them as of Monday morning. The Ramsey County Medical Examiner will identify the driver and determine their cause of death in the coming days.

In a press release, police said preliminary evidence points to excessive speed as a contributing factor in this fatal crash.

The incident remains under investigation, officials said.
