Calling all tutors! Minnesota districts need 1,500 tutors for upcoming school year

Math and reading tutors will receive training before working with students.

MINNEAPOLIS — Back to school is only a few weeks out and according to AmeriCorps, a non-profit, school districts across Minnesota have an urgent need for tutors.

Senior manager Lizzie Morris says reading and math tutors are in high demand.

"We are looking for about 500 tutors here in the metro area and 1,000 tutors overall statewide right now for the 2019-2020 school year," Morris said.

AmeriCorps points to research showing one in three Minnesota third graders is not reading at grade level. Meanwhile, state exam results show 40 percent of Minnesota eighth graders do not demonstrate grade-level proficiency in math.

That could change if hiring goals are met. The organization believes more than 35,000 students statewide would benefit from the 1,500 additional tutors.

Here's how to apply.

"The number one qualification is that they have to be passionate about making a difference and want to impact their communities," Morris said. "More logistically, 18 years of age or older with a high school diploma or equivalent."

Once you're hired and trained, you may work 18, 25, or 35 hours per week. Tutors receive  a stipend every two weeks and could earn up to an additional $4,200 for their own student loans or tuition.

Those who are 55 or older may pass on the money to family members.

Many tutors even qualify for free health insurance and child care assistance.

Tutors are expected to start in August and continue through the upcoming school year.

Anyone interested is encouraged to apply now through Minnesota Math Corps and Minnesota Reading Corps, two AmeriCorps initiatives.
