Courier, stem cell recipient meet 10 years after donation

Saturday was World Marrow Donor Day, bringing the local men together.

MINNEAPOLIS — The National Marrow Donor Program, previously known as Be The Match, hosted a gathering over the weekend that brought two men together who hadn't seen each other for the past ten years.

Carl Shedivy was in need of a stem cell transplant nearly a decade ago. The courier who brought him those life-saving cells was Craig Thomseth of the Twin Cities.

The men met in person for the first time on stage Saturday.

"It's great to find that there's individuals in the world that are willing to donate, willing to be a courier to go and pick up the stem cells and deliver them," Shedivy said. "Makes you feel pretty good about humans."

After Shedivy received his stem cell treatment, he too became a courier.

Minnesota Timberwolves' Naz Reid was also at the event. He has teamed up with the National Marrow Donor Program in the fight against cancer.
