STILLWATER, Minn. - Dr. Thomas Stormant, Urologist at HealthPartners, says bladder problems caused by an enlarged prostate affect about two out of three men in their 60s and goes up from there.
There are a number of options out there to treat symptoms and Dr. Stormant says he gets a lot of questions about herbal supplements.
“People don't necessarily want a prescription medication for it. They want some help, but prescription drugs can be expensive, can have side effects and require a doctor visit,” Dr. Stormant says.
The most popular supplement out there for prostate health, he says, is saw palmetto.
Do these supplements work?
“I've seen patients have significant improvement in urination, but it's usually transient, it usually goes away after a month or two or three, “Dr. Stormant says. “Is there an actual chemical effect from the herbal or is it a placebo effect? Unclear.”
Dr. Stormant points out that herbals probably won't do any harm as long as you aren't going above the recommended dose.
If the symptoms persist, he says he recommends checking in with a doctor who can make sure there isn't something more serious going on, can prescribe medication, and help you with other home remedies.
