BROOKLYN PARK, Minn. — A bicyclist was fatally struck by a school bus in Brooklyn Park Wednesday morning, according to police.
The incident happened around 6:30 a.m. near the intersection of Zane Avenue North and 65th Avenues North, just south of I-94.
Brooklyn Park Police Deputy Chief Mark Bruley says responding officers found a man in his 30s who had been hit by the bus while riding his bike. He died from his injuries at the scene. The Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office later identified him as 31-year-old Phillip Ryan Anderson of Plymouth.
"We don't believe it was the actual impact of the vehicle. The vehicle went over the bicyclist," Bruley said.
Investigators say the bus was going less than 20 miles per hour at the time of the crash.
Witnesses say the bus stopped at the stop lights and then turned right onto Zane Avenue.
During the turn, police say the bus collided with the bicyclist as he crossed the street.
"The bus was going extremely slow. It was literally just taking off from a dead stop when the collision occurred," Bruley says.
There were 10 students on the bus on their way to a local charter school. None of them were injured. Bruley says the bus driver is cooperating with investigators.
Brooklyn Park Police say they are investigating, with help from the Minnesota State Patrol and the Hennepin County Sheriff's Office.
The City of Brooklyn Park says there is a history of accidents at this intersection. Between 2016 and 2018, there were 27 crashes, causing 14 injuries.
The intersection is now back open.
KARE 11 has reached out to the bus company, Lake Country Transportation, for comment, but representatives say they are not commenting on the incident at this time.
