How to avoid mice in the house during the warm weather

You know who loves the lack of snow? Mice. Local pest control companies say their calls for mice are up 30%.

CHANHASSEN, Minn. — Minnesota has a lot less snow than we normally do this time of the year. In turn, pest control companies say they're seeing a lot more mice.

"The truth is they're nesting in your house all year round," BOGO Pest Control quality insurance manager, Scott Dorn said.

Dorn said the mast year and milder winter created the perfect combination for a rise in rodents. A mast is when trees, shrubs and bushes create more seeds and fruit.

Compared to last year, BOGO Pest Control has seen a 30% increase in calls for mice.

How do you know if you have mice?

Dorn said finding droppings from mice (most commonly in garages, kitchens, by pets' food bowls or in furnace rooms), seeing them, and hearing scratching noises in the walls are indicators you have mice.

What should you do?

It's recommended to call an expert who will find the holes they're sneaking into and seal them shut. It stops the mice from going in and out of the house. Once the holes are sealed, experts say to lay traps in areas where you find them. It's recommended to lay them at higher levels, and not directly on the ground.
