Police seize over 50 animals, at least 15 deceased, from Fridley animal rescue

According to Fridley police, officers initiated a search after receiving a tip in February alleging animal maltreatment at Happy Tails Rescue.

FRIDLEY, Minn. — Authorities are looking for answers from a Fridley animal rescue, in which police said dozens of animals, many dead, were recovered from the nonprofit as part of a search warrant executed last month.

According to Fridley police, officers initiated a search after receiving a tip in February 2024 alleging animal maltreatment at Happy Tails Rescue. The search warrant, executed on May 21, 2024, shows 25 dogs, 12 cats, a bird, a guinea pig, two deceased dogs and 13 deceased cats -- in addition to log books and other miscellaneous items -- were confiscated from the property.

FPD said the search came after months of investigation, interviewing the rescue's volunteers and staff. Police said both the Fridley location and an associated building in Oak Grove were searched.

The surviving animals were taken from the rescue and placed in the care of the Animal Humane Society. Authorities said the investigation is ongoing.
