RED WING, Minn. — Xcel Energy said customers should not expect any impact on their service with two electricity-generating units temporarily offline for maintenance at the Prairie Island nuclear plant near Red Wing.
In a statement emailed to KARE 11, Xcel Energy said Prairie Island Unit 2 was powered down for routine maintenance last month, a process that typically happens every two years. Xcel said the two-month process is now expected to take a little longer due to supply chain challenges.
Prairie Island's Unit 1 also powered down about a month ago, after what an Xcel spokesperson described as "an equipment issue (that) occurred between the turbine and the electric grid." Xcel said repairs are underway.
"There has been no impact to customers’ electric service from the units being offline," Xcel spokesperson Kevin Coss said in a statement to KARE 11. "We continuously plan for our customers’ energy needs and will ensure the continued reliability of their service going into the winter."
Xcel says there's not a precise timeline, but the company is hopeful both units can be back online in January.
