MINNEAPOLIS — A 17-year-old with a criminal history, including possession of a machine gun, fleeing police and car theft, was charged Friday in a carjacking case in which authorities say he sped off with an infant in the car.
Minneapolis police tell KARE 11’s Lou Raguse the teen is a well-known carjacking suspect and KARE 11 has uncovered a lengthy criminal history. KARE 11 is not naming the suspect because he is still a juvenile.
Dispatchers received a 911 call at 1:44 p.m. from Star Foods on the 800 block of Lowry Ave. N. in Minneapolis on Monday. The victim said his car, a Dodge Charger, had just been stolen at gunpoint, adding that the suspect brought an infant with him and placed the child in the backseat before driving away.
A juvenile delinquency petition — the juvenile system’s charging document — says:
The victim was carjacked twice; the first time on June 17 by a group of juveniles. Two days later, the victim saw that someone online was trying to sell the stolen car, so he arranged to meet to buy it back.
The victim arrived in a Toyota Camry to meet the suspect, and he and the teen took the Charger for a test drive.
They made their way to Star Foods to arrange payment.
He said the teen was holding a gun in his hand and at some point during the exchange, the suspect put the baby in the victim's Camry and drove away.
Responding officers made a traffic stop near the carjacking scene and arrested the teen suspect. Police say the infant was not in a car seat when the suspect was pulled over.
Just one month ago, the teen was charged in juvenile court in a separate incident for possessing a machine gun kit and committing a crime while wearing a bulletproof vest, with prosecutors adding an additional gun charge.
The teen suspect is in police custody.
