Mother and son burned in cabin explosion

St. Louis County sheriff's officials say a 37-year-old woman and her 12-year-old son were both burned over "large parts" of their bodies.

CHISHOLM, Minn. — A woman and her son are recovering from significant burns after their cabin exploded Sunday in northern Minnesota.

The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office says the 37-year-old woman and her 12-year-old boy were at the cabin in Balkan Township near Chisholm when a propane tank inside the structure exploded, triggering a fire. Both were burned over large portions of their bodies but were able to walk to a neighbor's place to get help.

Both were transported to Hibbing Hospital by ambulance for treatment. There is no word at this hour on their conditions.

Investigators say the 20 lb. propane tank - the size used on most gas grills and fire tables - was connected to a heater and was being used to heat the cabin. Pictures from the scene show the structure was reduced to rubble by the explosion and subsequent fire.
