ST PAUL, Minn. — Police took a man into custody Friday night after he barricaded himself in a squad car at the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center.
The incident began around 6:30 p.m., officials said in a press release, when police were called to a gas station on the 2000 block of Marshall Avenue in St. Paul for a man in his 40s who was locked in the bathroom and refusing to leave.
Officials said when officers tried to get the man out of the bathroom, he charged at them and was arrested for trespassing and obstructing the legal process. He was taken to the Ramsey County Law Enforcement Center, police said.
Once police arrived at the law enforcement center's garage, officers reported hearing a "loud noise" that police thought may have been a gunshot. The officers took cover and tried to talk with the suspect still in the squad, but he refused to cooperate, officials said.
According to a press release, officers thought the suspect could have a gun and called in more officers to handle the situation safely.
Police engaged with the man for around an hour and a half, a press release said, using "less lethal tools and drones." Once police were able to see into the squad and approach it they were able to remove the suspect from the car.
St. Paul fire medics were called and the man was taken to Regions Hospital to be checked out.
Police did not find any firearms and the squad was towed, officials said. The suspect is not facing any new charges based on what happened in the garage on Friday night.
This incident is still under investigation.
