Low humidity, gusting winds prompt Red Flag Warning for southern Minnesota

On Sunday, from noon to 6 p.m., 13 counties are warned against open burning and unattended campfires.

MINNEAPOLIS — Sunday's warm weather, winds and low humidity prompted a Red Flag Warning from the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources.

From noon to 6 p.m. on March 3, the following counties are affected:

  • Blue Earth
  • Dodge
  • Faribault
  • Freeborn
  • Houston
  • Martin
  • Mower
  • Fillmore
  • Olmsted
  • Steele
  • Waseca
  • Watonwan
  • Winona

A Red Flag Warning means that any fire could spread quickly and easily start to burn out of control.

Those living in affected counties should not start any outdoor fires and should also check on any recent burns to ensure they are completely extinguished.

“Any spark could become a wildfire under Red Flag conditions,” said DNR Wildfire Prevention Specialist Karen Harrison in a press release.

The DNR will not issue or activate any open burning permits during the Red Flag Warning.
