Where to drive and park during a busy weekend in downtown Minneapolis

Expect a busy weekend downtown with the U.S. Gymnastics Olympic Trials and Pride.

MINNEAPOLIS — Downtown Minneapolis will be hopping (and twisting, leaping, spinning and tumbling) this weekend for Gymnastics City USA alongside Twin Cities Pride weekend.

Multiple events are scheduled throughout the weekend; for Gymnastics City USA, that includes the Promenade du Nord at Nicollet Mall, the Flip Zone between Target Center and Target Field, and of course the U.S. Olympic Trials competition at Target Center. For Pride, in addition to the annual parade, expect plenty of food and fun at Loring Park.

Visitors heading downtown for these events will want to be aware of several road closures:

Thursday, June 27- Monday, July 1:

  • First Avenue between 6th and 7th Streets in front of Target Center will be reduced to one lane.

Sunday, June 30:

  • Portions of Plymouth Ave., Main Street and Hennepin Ave. - closed from 9 a.m. to noon for the Rainbow Run 5K and Rainbow Dash
  • Hennepin Ave. between 3rd Street and Spruce Street - closed for the Pride Parade

The city of Minneapolis recommends checking MnDOT's 511 website for traffic conditions, or considering alternative transportation on Metro Transit, including the Blue Line and Green Line light rail service.

For those who will be driving and parking downtown, city officials remind motorists to check signs closely for time limits and hours of parking enforcement. There are also several city-owned parking facilities and privately run parking options available.
