Man injured after encounter with Saint Paul police

Officials said officers were responding to a sexual assault in progress on Thomas Avenue West overnight.

SAINT PAUL, Minn. — A man was sent to the hospital early on Saturday morning after being shot by police on Thomas Avenue in Saint Paul.

According to officials, officers were called to a multi-unit building in the 400 block of Thomas Avenue West in Saint Paul for a sexual assault in progress. A 911 caller told police a man was physically and sexually assaulting a woman while armed with a handgun, police said in a press release.

The caller said he could hear the woman screaming.

As Saint Paul officers arrived, they said they saw a man trying to exit the building through a back window, officials said. Officers outside the building said they saw that man going back into the building through the same window.

Officials said police inside the building were at the door of the apartment where the assault happened and were able to get the woman safely out of the building.

The officers then tried to call the suspect out of the apartment into the hallway. Officials said the man charged out of the apartment toward police. One officer fired at the man, striking him in the arm, according to officials.

Emergency crews on scene provided first aid to the injured man. He was taken to Regions Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, officials said. The woman was not injured in the shooting.

The officers involved in the shooting were wearing body cameras that were turned on, officials said. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) was asked to investigate by the Saint Paul Police Department.

Officers involved in the shooting will be placed on administrative leave.
