MINNEAPOLIS — Two adults and two children were taken to the hospital and four other people were left without a home after a fire at an apartment in Minneapolis' Whittier neighborhood.

According to information from the Minneapolis Fire Department, crews were called to an apartment building at 2747 Stevens Avenue South just before 10:30 p.m. Saturday.

Firefighters saw black smoke and fire showing from a second-floor apartment when they arrived; crews laid lines and started searching the building.

Two adults and two children were checked out on scene and then taken to the hospital for possible smoke inhalation and singe burns in their hair.

The Red Cross was called to help three adults and a child living in the apartment above the burned and now uninhabitable unit.

Residents told officials there was a "small explosion" prior to the fire. The cause of the fire is still under investigation, officials said.
