GOLDEN VALLEY, Minn. — Editor's note: The video above first aired on KARE 11 in April 2023.
There are at least 10,002 reasons to visit Warren Kapsner's Golden Valley home this spring.
"Personally, I just like the fact that people really enjoy it and they really appreciate it," said Kapsner.
The other 10,000 reasons? Every inch of yard is covered in beautiful, blooming daffodils.
"They keep multiplying," he said. "Actually, 8,000 to 10,000 is probably conservative."
Kapsner said he's grown daffodils for many years, but the COVID-19 pandemic inspired him to go bigger than ever.
"With the pandemic, there was nothing to do, so that's kind of what probably drove it forward a bit more," he said.
For some, idle hands may be tools for the devil, but not for Kapsner — he used his idle pandemic hands to create something divine.
"In 2020, I planted 1,500 and then it just kind of got out of hand since then," he said, "and I put in a bunch more — another 1,000 or so last year — so now, there's 5,000 bulbs."
Kapsner said he expects those 5,000-plus daffodil bulbs to produce two to four blooms each, peaking now and continuing over the next few weeks.
"This weather is ideal for them," Kapsner said. "It'll be good for another week or two unless it gets really hot."
That's why Kapsner encourages the community to swing by before the hardy perennials inevitably go back to sleep, dreaming about coming back even greater and stronger next year.
"That's the beauty of the daffodils: You plant them, and that's it. You don't have to do anything," he said. "So next year, there'll be thousands of more blooms to the point where it'll just be a sea of flowers."
Those interested in visiting with Kapsner and his daffodils can find them at 130 Edgewood Ave. S. in Golden Valley.
