Missing child found safe, but suspect not in custody

The Wyoming, Minn. police chief says the baby and mother are safe and being "medically evaluated."

WYOMING, Minn. — The Chisago Co. Sheriff's Office said a six-month-old boy who was reported missing on Thursday afternoon has been found safe, but the suspect is not yet in custody.

In a news release from the Wyoming, Minn. police department, officers said they responded to a report of a woman in distress in a bathroom at a gas station off I-35. The woman said she, her boyfriend, and 6-month-old infant were driving back from Hinckley when they got into an argument in the car. After they pulled into the gas station, the woman told police the argument continued in a restroom where she was assaulted.

Police said the suspect then left the scene in the woman's car, with the 6-month-old child still in the back seat.

The Wyoming police chief tells KARE 11 the baby was later found safe at a home in White Bear Lake, where the suspect dropped off the child with a friend. The chief says both the baby and mother are safe and being "medically evaluated."

"The collaboration and assistance from all those law enforcement agencies really brought this to a fast and quick resolve, and a really positive one, because we got the six-month-old back uninjured and unharmed," said Wyoming Police Chief Paul Hoppe.

Police said the suspect is still wanted for questioning. He's described as a 37-year-old white male, approximately 250 pounds, wearing a black and gray hoodie. He's believed to be in possession of large knives.
