BEVERLY SHORES, Indiana — The body of a Minnesota teen has been recovered from Lake Michigan following a swimming mishap off the coast of Indiana Tuesday.
The Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) said search crews pulled the 17-year-old Eagan boy from the water near the community of Beverly Shores. No other details were released.
Conservation officers were deployed shortly after 2 p.m. Tuesday, along with first responders from a number of agencies, after reports of swimmers in distress off the shore of Beverly Shores. Arriving responders found two swimmers and a good Samaritan onshore and in need of medical attention. Those three individuals were transported to a local hospital and are reported in stable condition.
Survivors confirmed that a third swimmer, identified as a 17-year-old from Eagan, was last seen about 300 feet from shore and was unaccounted for. Rescue teams attempted to enter the lake to search for the team but were turned back by dangerous conditions, including waves that were forecast in the range of six to nine feet.
A shore-based search was launched using vessels from the United States Coast Guard and the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Marine Unit, along with overhead drones, but they were unable to find the missing teen.
Search and rescue teams were back at the lake Thursday morning and recovered the body.
Beverly Shores, Indiana is about 55 miles southeast of Chicago.
