Shakopee community mourns loss of another teen after crash

The Shakopee Public Schools say Evan Martin, a 16-year-old high school junior, died of injuries suffered in a Jan. 24 incident.

SHAKOPEE, Minn. — The community of Shakopee is mourning the loss of another young life following a car crash on Jan. 24.

A post on X (Twitter) by the Shakopee Public Schools announced the death of 16-year-old Evan Martin, a student at the district's high school. His family informed school leaders of Evan's passing early Monday from critical injuries suffered in the crash.

Friends of the Martin family had already set up a GoFundMe account to help offset mounting medical expenses. That account could also help pay for his funeral costs as well.

The Scott County Sheriff's Office says Evan was the sole occupant of a 2010 Mazda3 that crossed the centerline on Townline Avenue around 9 p.m. on Jan. 24, hit the ditch and struck a tree. Investigators don't believe drugs or alcohol played a role in the fatal crash and say the teen was wearing his seatbelt.

Martin was rushed to Hennepin County Medical Center, where he would eventually die of injuries suffered in the crash.

“On behalf of the Scott County Sheriff’s Office, I extend my deepest sympathies to the family of the young man who tragically lost his life in this incident," said Sheriff Luke Hennen in a released statement. "Our hearts go out to the community affected by this heartbreaking loss.”

Evans's death is another blow for Shakopee students, staff and community members who were already dealing with the loss of Mikayla McCarvel, a promising student-athlete who died of injuries suffered in a crash on Dec. 26. Mikayla fought to survive before finally passing on Jan. 16. Her father Dan McCarvel wrote in a post on Mikayla's CaringBridge site that his daughter was able to "grant several prayers of other families who were waiting ever so patiently on a donor registry."
