BACKUS, Minn. — State investigators are looking into the death of a man who was shot by a Cass County deputy investigating reports of an intruder.
Sheriff Tom Burch says dispatchers received a call shortly after 1:30 p.m. Sunday reporting an intruder at a home in the city of Backus. The caller said at least one shot had been fired.
Burch says deputies responded to the area and encountered a man who approached deputies while holding a firearm. The incident ended with a deputy fatally shooting the man. The suspect was later identified as Keith Haux, 57, of Backus.
Responding deputies also found a man dead inside the home where the intruder was reported. The man was later identified as 72-year-old Maynard Anderson. The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) was called in to lead the investigation, with Pine River Police, Pequot Lakes Police and the Minnesota State Patrol assisting.
The officers involved in the incident are on administrative leave, which is standard procedure in most officer-involved shootings. Sheriff Burch says there is no continuing threat to public safety.
