The sheriff of Cook County said a bomb threat directed at a weekend Pride event came from an email address in Russia, and has closed the case for now.
Sheriff Pat Eliasen shared in an email sent out Monday morning that an investigation into the threat - which targeted the Cook County Pride Celebration - revealed the email originated in Moscow and that nothing suspicious was uncovered.
The sheriff's department responded after the emailed threat targeting Pride attendees came in around 10:30 Saturday morning. Deputies were dispatched and conducted a sweep of event locations, with nothing suspicious being found. Investigators checked in with the on-duty Crow Wing County bomb squad, and determined that Cook County did everything the bomb squad would have done to ensure crowd safety.
βWe are taking this threat very seriously and will pour every resource we can into finding the source," Eliasen assured following the threat. "Safety for all people in Cook County is our main focus.β
A person attending the celebration posted that after the bomb sweep, the event went on as planned.
Sheriff Eliasen says the case will remain closed, although any additional information that comes in will be evaluated for authenticity and potential impact.
