Sheriff, deputies out helping homeless in the cold

Leaders in both counties say if you see someone out in the cold that needs help, call 311, or the sheriff's offices.

MINNEAPOLIS — This arctic blast is especially dangerous for vulnerable Minnesotans who don't have a place to stay.

Hennepin County Sheriff Dave Hutchinson was out in the subzero cold with deputies Wednesday night. They were looking for people experiencing homelessness in downtown Minneapolis, to get them cold weather necessities, or to a shelter.

"This is an emergency situation," Hutchinson said. "My job as a sheriff is to make sure my staff and I are out keeping people safe because that's the oath I took, is no matter what."

The Ramsey County Sheriff's Office has its own severe weather shelter set up at the Union Depot.
