'Soul of the Southside' celebrates Juneteenth

Around 30 sponsors helped make the event possible, including Metro Transit, which provided free rides to the festival.

MINNEAPOLIS — Crowds gathered in south Minneapolis to commemorate and celebrate Juneteenth with music, food, fashion and more on Wednesday.

The "Soul of the Southside" festival, which happened near the intersection of East Lake Street -- Minnehaha Avenue and 27th Avenue -- is now in its third year.

KARE 11's Cece Gaines and Jason Hackett guest hosted the event, with Reggie Wilson and Alexis Rogers emceeing.

Around 30 sponsors helped make the event possible. That includes Metro Transit, which provided free rides to the festival.

A 1-month-old celebrated her first Juneteenth with a nap. While a seasoned Trinidadian man made roti after roti. "It's like Americans have hamburgers. We have rotis," said Claude Alkins, of Grumpy Claude's food truck.

"Oh man, it's lovely man, just to see everybody out here, I'm out with the rest of my food truck guys," said Alkins.

Music was also a hit, with 16 bands and solo artists performing throughout the day.
