Suspect in custody after South St. Paul officer fires gun during investgation

Police said the officer fired after a suspect brandished and pointed a weapon at them during an investigation.

SOUTH ST PAUL, Minn. — A suspect is in police custody after brandishing and pointing a weapon at officers on Friday night in South St. Paul. 

Police said in a press release that officers were called to a multi-unit apartment building in the 200 block of Grand Avenue West for an "unspecified disturbance" around 10:15 p.m. 

When officers arrived, they found an adult male in a parking garage and police said the man, a 54-year-old from South St. Paul, brandished and pointed a weapon at them. Officials said an officer intentionally discharged their firearm while trying to take the man into custody. 

No injuries were reported at the scene, the man was taken into custody and a weapon was recovered, officials said. The suspect was taken to the Dakota County Jail where he is held on probable cause 2nd-degree assault. 

The Minnesota BCA and West St. Paul police department are helping with the investigation.
