ST PAUL, Minn. — The Saint Paul Police Department (SPPD) arrested a man and launched a homicide investigation after an elderly man was assaulted in a vehicle Thursday on Interstate 94.

Officers from the SPPD initially responded to assist Minnesota State Patrol troopers with a reported assault on eastbound I-94 near Prior Avenue at 12:30 p.m., according to the department.

Upon arrival, the officers found two men who had been in a vehicle together, the elder man was unconscious and transported to Regions where he was pronounced dead.

The younger man was booked into the Ramsey County jail on suspicion of second-degree murder, according to SPPD's post on X. The suspect is 32 years old and from St. Paul.

The younger man self-reported the incident, telling 911 dispatch that he had assaulted the older man, said SPPD Public Information Officer Mike Ernster.

Preliminary information from the SPPD suggests the two men were known to each other and that the altercation occurred inside the vehicle, said Ernster, who added that the case was "very unusual."

On X, police said the man has been booked into the Ramsey County Jail on suspicion of second-degree murder.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
