PRIOR LAKE, Minn. — A Monticello man has been arrested and charged with murder, following a fatal shooting Thursday in Prior Lake, according to police.

Court documents charge 28-year-old Tyler Schlotfeldt-Gidney with felony possession of a firearm and second-degree murder in the death of Justin Boyland, 28, of Minneapolis.

The criminal complaint filed Monday in Scott County said officers with the Prior Lake Police Department were sent to Spring Lake Regional Park around 4:30 p.m. on Oct. 26 after reports of a shooting. The complaint said when officers arrived, they found the victim, later identified as Boyland, on the ground with a gunshot wound to his upper right leg.

Court documents said officers rendered medical aid until Boyland was transported by ambulance to a local hospital. He was then transferred to HCMC, where doctors reported the bullet had struck him in or near his femoral artery. He was rushed into surgery but died from his injuries on Oct. 28.

During their investigation, officials said they spoke with the victim's girlfriend, who is also the mother of a shared child with Schlotfeldt-Gidney.

Prosecutors claim the woman said she and the victim drove her vehicle to the park to meet Schlotfeldt-Gidney, allegedly to talk about their child. She said she brought her boyfriend because Schlotfeldt-Gidney had "been physical with her in the past" and Boyland "didn't trust" Schlotfeldt-Gidney. Court records go on to say that when the woman parked next to Schlotfeldt-Gidney in the parking lot, he exited his vehicle and walked to the rear of her vehicle, prompting Boyland to do the same.

The woman told police that's when she heard gunshots, and saw Boyland "stumble" back into the vehicle. She said she started to leave, but quickly pulled over and stopped the vehicle to call 911 for help.

Another witness who had been in the park at the time of the shooting echoed the woman's timeline. Prosecutors said he told investigators he saw a man, matching Schlotfeldt-Gidney's description, walking from the area after the shooting took place, and putting a handgun in his waistline while smiling at him. The witness said Schlotfeldt-Gidney then peeled out of the parking lot in a vehicle matching the description of Schlotfeldt-Gidney's.

The complaint said police caught up with Schlotfeldt-Gidney on Friday, Oct. 27, and subsequently arrested him and placed him in custody at the Scott County Jail, where he remains.
