ST. LOUIS COUNTY, Minn. — The St. Louis County Sheriff's Office said a body was found in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCA) on Friday evening.

According to a press release, on May 10 around 5 p.m., a group of canoeists in the BWCA called 911 to report a capsized canoe and a partially submerged human body on Lake Agnes. The lake is approximately 25 miles north of Ely.

When officials arrived on the scene, they recovered the body of 62-year-old Mark Ham, a resident of Duluth. Family members later told authorities that Ham was on a solo camping trip.

Officials said they later found a life jacket on scene that was not worn by the victim.

The incident remains under investigation.

As this weekend was the start of the fishing season in Minnesota, the St. Louis County Sheriff's Office and Rescue Squad urges everyone to wear a lifejacket when out on the water. According to state law, one U.S. Coast Guard-approved, properly sized, and easily accessible life jacket needs to be present for each person on a boat.

You can find more about Minnesota's lifejacket laws on the DNR website.
