ST MICHAEL, Minn. — Two women are dead and three others are recovering from injuries after their vehicle crashed into a loose tire that flew off a semi on Interstate 94 in Wright County Saturday evening.
The Minnesota State Patrol says a Nissan Rogue was eastbound on I-94 just before 5 p.m. Saturday when it collided with one of two tires that had come off a Freightliner semi headed west on the busy interstate.
The driver of the Nissan, 44-year-old Viengkhone Nguyen of Brooklyn Park and one of the passengers, 43-year-old Lea Khamphachanh of St. Cloud, were killed in the crash.
Three passengers in the vehicle were injured and treated at North Memorial Hospital. Officials described their injuries as "non-life-threatening."
All of those riding in the Nissan were wearing their seatbelts.
The driver of the semi-truck was not injured.
It is unclear whether any equipment-related citations will be issued in connection with the tires that flew off the semi. The State Patrol says when the investigation of the fatal incident is completed, the results will be forwarded to prosecutors for consideration of charges.
