ST PAUL, Minn. — City crews in St. Paul are shutting down a list of things along the Mississippi River due to annual spring flooding.

Water Street/Lilydale Road and Lilydale Regional Park will temporarily close beginning Wednesday, June 5 by 11 p.m., according to a St. Paul news release.

Water Street, which runs along the south side of the Mississippi, will be closed to vehicle, bicycle, and pedestrian traffic between Highway 13 and Plato Boulevard.

Lilydale's public boat launch and bike trails will also be off-limits.

At the end of the day on Tuesday, June 4, the following facilities and areas will also face changes and closures due to rising water levels:

  • City House will remain open to the public, but water will be turned off. They will have hand washing stations and Porta Potties
  • Hidden Falls Regional Falls boat launch is closed
  • Harriet Island public dock lower ramps were raised, including Showboat and Paddleford docks
  • Kelly’s Landing is closed
  • Lambert’s Landing Dock is closed
  • Lilydale Regional Park, including pedestrian and bike trails and a public boat launch, will close on Wednesday, June 5, 2024, by 11 p.m.
  • Meeker Island is closed

Crews have placed barricades on flooded trails and areas. Some of the impacted parks include:

  • Crosby Farm Park
  • Hidden Falls South
  • Robert Piram Trail
  • Upper Landing/Chestnut Plaza

The temporary closures are part of the city's flood response plan, which is triggered when the river's level reaches 10 feet. As of Tuesday afternoon, the river stands at 9.8 feet. According to the response plan, minor flood stage is reached at 14 feet, moderate is 15 feet and major flood stage is at 17 feet.

City officials say people need to use caution while exploring areas close to the river because water levels can change quickly.
