ST PAUL, Minn. — A student at a St. Paul high school was taken into custody Monday afternoon after police found a gun in his possession, according to officials.
The St. Paul Police Department was called to Central High School at around 2:15 p.m. Monday on a report of a student in possession of a gun inside the school. When officers arrived, police said they began working with St. Paul School Security and Central High School staff to identify the student.
Police say officers located that student, but the student was not in possession of a gun.
Officers received information that another student may have the gun, so officers made contact with that second student. Police say the male student ran when officers approached him.
Officers eventually caught up with the student and police say they found a handgun tucked into the student's pants.
SPPD says the gun was reported as stolen.
Officers arrested the student and police say he was transported to the Ramsey County Juvenile Detention Center where police say he will likely be placed there for illegal possession of a handgun and possession of a handgun on school property.
A spokesperson for Saint Paul Public Schools (SPPS) says this is the fourth gun that has been recovered from a student inside one of their schools.
During the 2022-23 school year, the district says five guns were recovered, and during the 2021-22 school year seven guns were recovered.
SPPS says this is the second time this school year that a gun has been recovered from Central High School.
