Police respond after car crashes into tree, find man fatally shot inside

The homicide occurred around 10:30 p.m. Monday in the Greater East Side neighborhood, police said.

ST PAUL, Minn. — St. Paul police are investigating a homicide after they found a man shot inside an SUV that crashed into a tree late Monday night. 

Sgt. Mike Ernster with the St. Paul Police said the incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. on Van Dyke Street and York Avenue in the Greater East Side neighborhood. 

Ernster said they are combing through multiple 911 calls that reported the car crash and gunshots. 

"There was numerous callers, a lot of people calling in, which is great, we encourage that," he said. "We will be trying to work with speaking with all those callers to see what they witnessed if anything or if they just heard it."

Police expect to be on the scene near Hazel Park all Tuesday morning.
