St. Paul's East Side celebrates and supports families ahead of the new school year

About 5,000 people attended the 14th Annual Back to School event, organized by Family Values for Life.

ST PAUL, Minn. — St. Paul’s East Side community came together Wednesday to celebrate and prepare both students and families for the new school year.

About 5,000 people attended the 14th Annual Back to School event, organized by Family Values for Life. Students could pick up backpacks filled with school supplies and new clothes, while families could also receive a box of food.

Organizers say it’s a meaningful celebration that also ensures every student starts the school year with the resources they need and deserve.

“I think it’s the most beautiful event,” said Shateka Flowers of Family Values for Life.

Flowers continued: “The families come together; the children come together. And we do it in a way that families can have pride.”

Dozens of community organizations and even the St. Paul School District also supported the event by sharing information with families. And First Covenant Church of St. Paul hosted the event on its property as part of its long-standing partnership with and support of the East Side neighborhood.
