State investigators release details on police shooting in St. Joseph

The BCA said a 38-year-old man pointed a gun at police officers and "then ran away."

ST JOSEPH, Minn — State investigators have released more information on last week's police shooting in St. Joseph where a deputy shot and injured a man.

The Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension (BCA) said St. Joseph police officers first responded on June 20 to reports of a man making threats of violence.

When officers arrived, the 38-year-old man pointed a gun at the police and "then ran away," according to a BCA news release.

The BCA said officers could not find him that night. However, the man repeatedly called the police department throughout the evening with more threats of violence. The Stearns County Attorney's Office issued a warrant for the man's arrest.

The next day, June 21, members of the Stearns/Benton County SWAT Team attempted to serve a warrant at his home on the 200 block of Able Street East.

Stearns County Deputy Tyler Thunstedt saw the man running toward a neighbor's house. The BCA investigation said the man ignored commands to stop and drop his weapon.

The man pointed a gun in Deputy Thunstedt's direction, according to the release. Officials said Deputy Thunstedt fired three rounds, one of which hit the man. The man was taken to a hospital "where he remains in stable condition," according to the release.

BCA officials said there were no other injuries. A handgun was recovered at the scene. Deputy Thunstedt and the other deputies at the shooting were wearing body cameras.

The BCA is reviewing all available videos as part of their investigation, the release stated.

Deputy Thunstedt is on standard administrative leave.
