Looking for a lighthouse? There's one available in Douglas County, WI

If your agency or nonprofit can take on the upkeep of a historic lighthouse, this 56-foot tower on Lake Superior could be yours.

DOUGLAS COUNTY, Wis. — Every year a federal program works to find caretakers for historic buildings and a lighthouse on Lake Superior is now available at no cost to a government agency or a nonprofit.

The Superior Harbor South Breakwater Light in Douglas County, Wis., was made available by the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) at no cost to eligible entities as part of a federal disposal program from the National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act (NHLPA) of 2000.

The U.S. Coast Guard (USGC) decided it no longer needed this lighthouse, making it available to one of the following eligible agencies:

  • Federal departments or agencies.
  • State and local departments or agencies.
  • Local government of the community where the light station is located
  • State-certified nonprofit organizations, educational agencies or community development organizations

Under the NHLPA, this historic light station must be used for "educational, park, recreational, cultural or historic preservation purposes."

So unfortunately, you and your Uncle Larry can't just move onto this property like it's the ultimate bachelor hangout. But if your nonprofit wants to, for example, teach other people about historic lighthouses, this could be all yours.

The GSA described the structure as "the 56-foot Superior Harbor Light is a rectangular concrete fog signal building topped with a concrete cylindrical tower. It is situated at the end of a breakwater owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) at the entrance to Allouez Bay, Port of Superior, Douglas County, Wisconsin," which while not poetic, pretty much sums up the blocky structure.

USGC is keeping the green flashing signal light and the fog signal.
