MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said Tuesday a man is in custody after officers responded to "an instance of domestic violence" at a Minneapolis apartment building. Authorities in Kandiyohi County say the man then drove to their jurisdiction, where he fatally shot one person and injured another.
The Minneapolis Police Department (MPD) posted to its X (formerly Twitter) that the incident began around 12:30 p.m. with a 911 call reporting shots fired from the balcony of an apartment located on the 2900 block of Lyndale Ave.
Chief O'Hara spoke with reporters later Tuesday afternoon, saying police determined the apartment was occupied by the suspect's ex-girlfriend and her current partner, whom O'Hara described as "victims," adding that neither was injured in the incident.
O'Hara said officers quickly learned the suspect and woman shared a child, who was subsequently located at a Minneapolis daycare facility which was then placed on lockdown as police pursued the suspect.
After executing a search warrant at the apartment, O'Hara confirmed no further victims were located. Shell casings were found on the ground in an alleyway.
"I know our officers did everything they could, but it appears clear that this person was homicidal and that he was bent on violence,” Chief O’Hara said in a released statement. “This is weighing especially heavy on the Crisis Negotiators that were on the phone with this individual.”
The suspect left Minneapolis and drove to Kandiyohi County, where sheriff's officials say he shot and injured a man in a rural part of the county. Then, officials believe, the suspect attempted a carjacking and fatally shot the driver near Willmar.
The Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office said the suspected shooter was arrested without "further loss of life or injury."
“Today, multiple lives were put in harm’s way, with one person sadly losing their life,” Kandiyohi County Sheriff Spokesperson Imran Ali said in a press release. “Our hearts go out to the victim’s family. Please continue to hold the victims, their families and our first responders in your prayers today.”
"It appears clear that this person was homicidal and just bent on committing violence," O'Hara said.
The suspect is being held in Kandiyohi County pending formal charges, which could come as early as Wednesday.
