MINNEAPOLIS — Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O'Hara said Tuesday a man is in custody after officers responded to "an instance of domestic violence" at a Minneapolis apartment building.

The Minneapolis Police Department posted to its X (formerly Twitter) around 1 p.m., saying the hours-long incident began with a 911 call reporting shots fired from the balcony of an apartment located on the 2900 block of Lyndale Avenue.

O'Hara spoke with reporters later Tuesday afternoon, saying police determined the apartment was occupied by the suspect's ex-girlfriend and her current partner, whom O'Hara described as "victims," but said no one was injured in the incident.

O'Hara said officers quickly learned the suspect and woman shared a child, who was subsequently located at a Minneapolis daycare facility, which was placed on lockdown as police pursued the suspect.

After executing a search warrant at the apartment, O'Hara confirmed no further victims were found. Shell casings were found on the ground in an alleyway.

The chief went on to say that when law enforcement discovered the suspect was no longer in the city, a team of crisis negotiators successfully made contact with the suspect before he allegedly committed "at least one crime" in Kandiyohi County.

O'Hara would not comment on what allegedly occurred outside of Minneapolis.

"It appears crimes occurred ... that some tragedy has occurred outside of the city," O'Hara said. "It appears clear that this person was homicidal and just bent on committing violence."

KARE 11 will update this story with more information as it becomes available.
