MINNEAPOLIS — One of the former Minneapolis police officers convicted in the murder of George Floyd was released from federal prison Tuesday.
Thomas Lane was one of three officers present when former MPD officer Derek Chauvin kneeled on Floyd's neck for more than nine minutes, killing him. Lane was sentenced at the state level for aiding and abetting second-degree manslaughter.
Lane, now 41, also pled guilty to federal charges of depriving Floyd of his civil rights. He completed the sentence four months ago but remained at the federal facility at Englewood, CO to serve out his state responsibilities.
Although the federal inmate database has not been updated as of Tuesday afternoon to reflect Lane's release, a spokesperson from the Federal Bureau of Prisons confirmed the news in an email to KARE 11 Tuesday afternoon. Lane will now be subject to one year of supervised release, officials said.
Chauvin is serving a 22 1/2 year sentence in prison after he was convicted of second-degree murder, third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, held most responsible for Floyd's death. Former officers Tou Thao and J. Alexander Kueng were also convicted of denying Floyd's civil rights and failing to intervene with Chauvin's use of force.
Chauvin, Thao and Kueng are still in prison serving longer sentences.
