BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — In the heart of the holiday season, Toys for Tots stands as a beacon of hope for families in need. Behind this massive program lies a captivating tale of one volunteer, Victoria Lynch, affectionately called Tori, whose life has been intricately woven into the fabric of this charitable initiative.
From the bustling Mall of America Toys For Tots Twin Cities headquarters, Lynch shared her perspective on the essence of the magic behind Toys for Tots.
As a dedicated volunteer, Lynch’s journey is a testament to the impact this program can have on both recipients and those who selflessly give their time.
"I partner with ALLIED Force Ministries, and then I have mine, which is Victory Is Imminent. My last year was over 10,000 kids, just our agencies together," Lynch shared. "I do a three-day distribution out in Apple Valley. I do another one out in Rosemont; we just try to serve as many kids as we can," she emphasized, highlighting the growing need for support.
Lynch's involvement in Toys for Tots stems from personal experience.
"I was a single mom of five. So I know what it's like not to have Christmas. I made a mistake, like 20 years ago, and shoplifted at Christmas to get Christmas gifts," she revealed. "I wanted to spoil my babies because I didn't have Christmas when I was a kid. I came from a pretty bad situation."
Lynch said the want of many parents to treat their children to a special holiday is a deeply impactful feeling. While watching KARE 11 one night, she learned about Toys for Tots. Lynch said the program not only provided gifts but also a sense of dignity.
"They had tables set up with the ages, and you got to shop for what your kid wanted. So it wasn't like you were getting something you thought, 'Hey, this kid is gonna want this.' You actually have to pick what you wanted for your child."
Now, with her children grown, they're picking up the mantle of service in their own way.
“I was open with my kids; I didn't — I never hid where they came from. And I'm glad I didn't because now I have a son who wants to do distribution in his area and we're gonna do it this year. So I'm glad that I was always honest with them about where they came from,” Lynch said.
After overcoming transitional housing, Tori's commitment to giving back became even more profound, stating, "It just became great because I could give back to where I once was."
Lynch said her story is a testament to the transformative power of compassion, turning a recipient of Toys for Tots into a driving force behind its magic.
"The program exists for a reason. It exists to help people that are struggling,” Lynch said.
