Train derails in Sherburne County

Officials said a BNSF train carrying consumer goods derailed near Big Lake early on Saturday morning.

BIG LAKE, Minn. — Roads are closed in Big Lake on Saturday after a train derailed near 197th Avenue and County Road 14.

According to the Sherburne County Sheriff's Office, a BNSF train carrying consumer goods derailed around 3:15 a.m., impacting 15 rail cars.

Police said no injuries were reported and there was no threat to the public.

Crews are working to clear the area, police said, including reopening impacted roadway crossings.

Near Big Lake, 172nd Street Northwest is blocked between 197th Avenue and County Road 14.

Metro Transit announced over social media the Northstar service to the Twins game was canceled on Saturday and confirmed to KARE 11 that the Big Lake derailment was the cause. The game is scheduled to begin at 6:10 p.m.

“I decided to drive up here,” said Bloomington resident and railroading enthusiast Hal Johnson. “It’s kittywampus.”

He is one of many onlookers in this normally quiet industrial area in Sherburne County.

"I looked and I realized it was quite close to Options Inc," said  Brenda Gwldert. "So I definitely wanted to come over and make sure it was far enough away."

Geldert is the executive director of the nonprofit Options Inc. based in the area.

“I can see there’s nothing coming through the disruption,” she said.

She says commuters rely on this track. Metro Transit has already canceled its Northstar service to the Twins game tonight, and will have more updates tomorrow morning.

“That is such a big asset to have in big Lake,” she said

KARE 11 will update this story as more information is made available.
