MINNEAPOLIS — University of Minnesota officials have decided to stop offering UMN email accounts and UMN Google Workspace to people after they graduate or retire.
The moves are an effort to reduce cyber security/data privacy risks and data storage costs, according to the U of M website.
U of M officials said to help with this transition they are offering a one-year transition for people who have graduated or retired before May 31, 2024.
When the U of M first began offering email to alumni and retirees, email was not widely available and free, according to the U of M website.
Officials added that data breaches were not as sophisticated and frequent as they are today.
And data storage was more or less free and unlimited to many peiople.
"Because the environment has changed, we must change," the website states.
The University is offering an opt-in alumn.umn.edu email account for people who need continued access.
