Expanded alcohol sales approved from U of M athletic events

The availability of alcoholic beverages to fans will be expanded over the next few years.

MINNEAPOLIS — You could get an alcoholic drink from your seat in future Huntington Bank Stadium games following a vote by the University of Minnesota Board of Regents.

The Regents approved a resolution Wednesday that expands alcoholic beverage sales not just at Huntington Bank Stadium but also Williams Arena/Maturi Pavilion and 3M Arena at Mariucci.  The goal is to enhance the experience similar to other major sports venues in the community.

Starting this year, visitors will be able to buy ready-to-drink canned and batched cocktails in concessions and premium areas. According to a press release, no bartending pouring is going to be part of the distribution of these drinks. Next year, there will be full service bars in premium areas and bottle service in suites.

In 2026-2027, alcohol sales to fans in stands and bleachers, also known as hawking, will begin. The press release said hawking will not be allowed in student sections during football games.

Twelve years ago alcoholic beverages became available at University venues, and in 2019 the board approved expansions of those sales and services to Williams Arena/Maturi Pavilion and 3M Arena at Mariucci.
