MINNEAPOLIS — A safety alert was sent out to students at the University of Minnesota after a kidnapping and robbery occurred in the early hours of Sunday morning.

According to officials, around 1 a.m. the victim was followed from Sally's over to the Superblock area near University Avenue in Minneapolis, where he was forced into a small car by three men.

The victim was then robbed at gunpoint and dropped off "somewhere" between the Superblock and the area around I-94 and the Cretin Avenue and Vandalia Street exit in Saint Paul.

Officials said the three men were described as wearing all black. No other identifying information has been provided.

"It is a pretty big concern, that type of thing is pretty scary, you hear about that stuff on the news but you don't expect it to happen around you or expect it to happen to someone you know," said Elisay Yoder, a student at the university.

The Minneapolis Police Department confirmed that it received a report of a robbery at gunpoint which occurred on Sunday morning.

"The male stated that he got into an unknown car with 3 unknown males after consuming alcohol at a local business.  The three unknown males reportedly stated that they were his Uber ride.  He was robbed at gunpoint while being driven around. Taken were his wallet and his phone.  He was let out of the vehicle onto Hwy 94 near Cretin Av in St Paul." said a spokesperson for the department.

This is a developing story and will be updated as more information becomes available.
