BLOOMINGTON, Minn. — Fire crews are working to put down a fire at a home in Bloomington that started when the structure was hit by a vehicle overnight.

The incident happened on the 200 block of E. 107th Street around 4:30 a.m. Bloomington Deputy Police Chief Mike Hartley says a vehicle with four people inside was moving at a high rate of speed down Nicollet Avenue when the driver turned, lost control and hit a mailbox. The vehicle then careened up the yard of the home and into the garage, finally coming to a stop after plowing all the way through.

Hartley says the vehicle apparently struck a gas line, or some other flammable source to trigger a fire that caused significant damage to both the garage and part of the adjoining home.

No residents were home during the incident.

The four occupants of the car bailed and ran, but were located nearby. Hartley says the driver was taken to a nearby hospital for blood tests, and may have been impaired.
