ST PAUL, Minn. — It's not going to make you rich - heck, it won't even buy you a combo meal at a fast food restaurant - but an estimated 150,000 Minnesotans are going to get a bit of payback after being overcharged by the state.
A refund of $2.25 will be sent to those who paid a technology surcharge twice when they transferred a title and renewed registration at the same time. The Department of Public Safety's Driver and Vehicle Services (DVS) Division says they only should have paid the fee once.
The double fee charges have been happening over the past five months, and the overcharges total approximately $337,500.
“It’s important that we return the fee to anyone who paid more than they should have,” DVS Director Emma Corrie said. “We are also taking steps to make sure no one else is overcharged in the future. We will also be tracking these types of transactions so that we can correct the situation as quickly as possible.”
The department began mailing out the refunds on Feb. 19. An update to the registration system Jan. 13 will allow clerks to waive the additional fee for those who transfer a title and renew registration in the same visit.
